Welcome to Fe for Female !

Hi I am Siddhi Bharadwaj !

About Iron

I started Fe for Female to spread awareness about iron deficiency among women in hopes of improving their well-being. Nearly 40% of teenage girls and young women in America are iron deficient. As a teenager, I have witnessed students compromise their health in pursuit of their academics and other activities, often leading to low energy levels and fatigue. Iron deficiency has become incredibly common and is too often neglected due to a lack of awareness.

  • Iron is an essential mineral vital for numerous bodily functions, including oxygen transport, energy production, and a healthy immune system
  • Iron deficiency can lead to a condition called iron-deficiency anemia, which can cause significant health problems if left untreated.

Importance of Iron in the Body

  • Oxygen transport: Iron is a key component of hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all body tissues. It is also found in myoglobin, which provides oxygen to muscle cells.
  • Energy production: As part of enzymes, iron is crucial for cellular respiration, the process that converts nutrients into energy. Low iron can lead to reduced energy and fatigue.
  • Immune function: The immune system relies on sufficient iron to function properly. A deficiency can weaken the immune response and increase vulnerability to infections.
  • Neurological function: Iron is needed for the synthesis of neurotransmitters that regulate mood, attention, and cognitive function. Low levels can lead to cognitive issues, including poor concentration and memory.
  • Healthy pregnancy: During pregnancy, a woman’s blood volume and need for iron increase significantly to support the development of the fetus. Inadequate iron can lead to complications, such as premature birth and low birth weight.
  • Overall growth and development: Iron supports the growth and development of all body tissues, especially during periods of rapid growth in infants, children, and teenagers.
